This bill is in the first step in the legislative process. Introduced
bills and resolutions first go to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise
them before they go to general debate. The majority of bills and resolutions never make it out of committee.

Sec. 2(a)(1) states that the Medicare coverage due to ESRD would end except for the coverage of immunosuppressive medications. Usually people who receive kidney transplants are covered for three years post-transplant. This would allow the medication coverage to extend beyond this time frame as long as the patient continues to pay their Medicare premiums. It looks like it is only relative for kidney transplant patients. Patients, regardless of age, qualify for Medicare when they are diagnosed with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Medicare would only cover three years of medications post-transplant. Since many people can't afford the cost of these medications, they are forced to stop taking them and their kidneys fail again, forcing Medicare to pay for dialysis or another transplant, wasting the initial investment by Medicare for the first transplant. |
