Background

John M. Roll was the chief federal judge in the state of Arizona and was slain along with five others in the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, on January 8, 2011.  Judge Roll was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and moved to Arizona as a child.  Judge Roll attended high school in Arizona and received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Arizona.  In 1991, Roll was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to fill a seat on the U.S. District Court for the state of Arizona and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 22, 1991.  In 2006, Judge Roll was appointed Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for Arizona.

Summary

S. 188 would designate a U.S. courthouse currently under construction in Yuma, AZ, as the “John M. Roll United States Courthouse.”  Under the bill, any reference to the courthouse in a law, map, regulation, or other record would be deemed to be a reference to the “John M. Roll United States Courthouse.”
