Mr. GALLO introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means


A BILL

To amend title II of the Social Security Act to prohibit the buying and selling of social security account numbers.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. PROHIBITION OF BUYING AND SELLING OF SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT NUMBERS.

    Section 208(a) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 408(a)) is amended--

      (1) in paragraph (8), by adding ‘or’ at the end; and

      (2) by inserting after paragraph (8) the following new paragraph:

      ‘(9) buys, sells, offers for sale, transfers, takes or gives in exchange, or pledges or gives in pledge any information for the purpose, in whole or in part, of conveying by means of such information the social security account number of any other person, or any derivative of such number, without the written consent of such other person;’.

SEC. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.

    The amendments made by section 1 shall apply with respect to violations occuring on or after the date of the enactment of this Act.
