Mr. WILSON introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Resources and, in addition, to the Committee on Agriculture, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned


A BILL

To require the Secretary of Agriculture to take action to control the infestation of southern pine beetles currently ravaging wilderness areas in the State of Texas.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. CONTROL OF THE SOUTHERN PINE BEETLE IN WILDERNESS AREAS IN TEXAS.

    Notwithstanding section 4(c) of the Wilderness Act (16 U.S.C. 1133(c)) and section 4(a) of the Texas Wilderness Act of 1984 (Public Law 98-574; 98 Stat. 3051), the Secretary of Agriculture shall undertake active measures--

      (1) to control the infestation of the southern pine beetle in the five wilderness areas in the State of Texas designated in section 2 of the Texas Wilderness Act of 1984; and

      (2) to prevent the spread of the southern pine beetle from such wilderness areas to adjacent private forest lands.
