To amend section 507(a) title 11 of the United States Code to increase, with respect to priority of payment, the aggregate amount of the claims of employees for compensation and benefits.

A BILL

To amend section 507(a) title 11 of the United States Code to increase, with respect to priority of payment, the aggregate amount of the claims of employees for compensation and benefits.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the ‘Fair Treatment of Compensation in Bankruptcy Act of 2002’.

SEC. 2. AMENDMENTS.

    Paragraphs (3) and (4) of section 507(a) of title 11, United States Code, are amended by striking ‘$4,000’ and inserting ‘$13,500’.

SEC. 3. APPLICATION OF AMENDMENTS.

    The amendments made by section 2 shall apply only with respect to cases commenced under title 11 of the United States Code after July 19, 2002.
