Since its 1980 creation, the little-known Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has been tasked with protecting people and communities from hazardous substances. This was in response to late ’70s environmental disasters such as those in Love Canal, New York where large amounts of toxic waste were dumped, often unknown to residents.

However, some conservatives believe the agency — a subset of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services — has become overzealous in its scope and regulations, expanding too far beyond its original ‘80s-era mission.
