Context
J. Edgar Hoover was the most famous and longest-serving director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), leading the organization from 1924 to 1972. That even predates its FBI name, which wasn’t acquired until 1935. (Younger generations may primarily know Hoover from his portrayal by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2011 movie J. Edgar.)
Under Hoover’s leadership, the FBI grew enormously in size and influence, although much of his record was controversial at the time and particularly in light of evolving societal norms.
