About the resolution
Do her actions merit the chamber’s official condemnation, used only once in the past three decades?
Context
The harshest punishment available to the House is expulsion, which removes a fellow member from office. That’s only been used five times in American history. And it’s only been used once in the last 30 years, in 2002 for Rep. James Trafficant (D-OH17) who committed bribery and falsified tax returns.
The next-harshest punishment is censure, a formal reprimand by the House towards a fellow member which nonetheless keeps them in office. That’s been used 23 times in American history. Introduced
Bills and resolutions are referred to committees which debate the bill before possibly sending it on to the whole chamber. |
H.Res. 784 (116th) was a simple resolution in the United States Congress.
A simple resolution is used for matters that affect just one chamber of Congress, often to change the rules of the chamber to set the manner of debate for a related bill. It must be agreed to in the chamber in which it was introduced. It is not voted on in the other chamber and does not have the force of law.
Resolutions numbers restart every two years. That means there are other resolutions with the number H.Res. 784. This is the one from the 116th Congress.
This simple resolution was introduced in the 116th Congress, which met from Jan 3, 2019 to Jan 3, 2021. Legislation not passed by the end of a Congress is cleared from the books.
