Satellite and internet radio need artists’ permission to play their songs, and then they must compensate them — but should broadcast radio be subject to the same mandates?


Under current law, AM or FM radio stations don’t need to pay artists or record labels in order to broadcast their music. Instead, they only pay the songwriters and music publishers. A terrestrial radio station also doesn’t need an artist’s permission to broadcast their song.

Contrast that with satellite radio like SiriusXM or internet radio like Spotify and Pandora, which are subject to more federal requirements regarding permissions and payments.
