Should hourly and salaried federal workers be paid differently for equal work?


Salaried employees and hourly employees for the federal government can receive very different compensation levels, for the exact same level of work.

Salaried employees are paid based on their designated “metropolitan labor market,” because the cost of living and commuting rates in an expensive city such as San Francisco are higher than for more rural areas such as Bismarck, North Dakota. But hourly employees are still paid based on the placement of military installations decades ago during the Cold War era — even if they’re at the same exact location as their salaried counterparts.
