The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization with 190 member countries that works to maintain the stability of the global monetary system, while preserving members’ unique currencies and economies.

Created in 1969, Special Drawing Rights (or SDRs) are an asset the IMF can use to increase the money supply for member countries during an economic downturn. The economics of it are complicated and the tool was rarely used for decades, until the 2009 global financial crash.
