Context

Former President Donald Trump’s most famous 2016 campaign pledge was to construct a 1,954-mile U.S.-Mexico border wall that Mexico would pay for.

Once in office, his plan hit some snags. During his first two years, the problems mostly involved geographic challenges and private property rights. During his third and fourth years, after Democrats took control of the House, Congress largely refused to appropriate money for the project.

Still, about 452 miles of border wall now exist, of which the Trump administration added 80 where there were none before. And actually, the U.S. paid for it.
