The first woman president, or the first president with a same-sex spouse, may be the *next *president.

Context

A 1982 law which makes it illegal to threaten the president or their immediate family refers to “the wife of a former president during his lifetime,” implying that the president must be male and their spouse must be female. So far in American history, indeed, that has always been true.
