It’s possible to pay more taxes solely as a result of getting married.

It’s complicated and involves lots of numbers, but essentially, the penalty can occur because when filing jointly, couples with equal incomes are more likely to be pushed into higher tax brackets than those with unequal incomes. As a result, the penalty is much more likely to occur when both members of a married couple earn approximately equivalent incomes — regardless of whether those are low, middle, or high.
