Summary of this bill

A Congress member’s salary would be the same as a judge, but not as much as the $40 million annual salary of Aaron Judge.

Context

Most members of Congress are paid $174,000 per year. A few top party leaders get paid more, including the Speaker of the House at $223,500, plus the House and Senate Democratic and Republican leaders at $193,400.

Congress is supposed to receive an automatic cost of living adjustment every year, indexed to inflation. However, all of the above salaries were last updated in 2009, since Congress has voted down its scheduled pay raise every year from 2010 and on.

A BILL

To amend the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946 to tie the salaries of Members of Congress to the salaries of the judiciary.

Tying salaries of Members of Congress to salaries of judiciary

(a)

Revision of salaries of Members

Section 601(a) of the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946 (2 U.S.C. 4501) is amended to read as follows:

(a)

The annual rate of pay for a Member of Congress shall be determined as follows:

(1)

For the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the annual rate of pay shall be equivalent to the greater of $274,200 or the annual rate of pay for an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

(2)

For the President pro tempore of the Senate, the majority leader and minority leader of the Senate, and the majority leader and minority leader of the House of Representatives, the annual rate of pay shall be equivalent to the greater of $236,900 or the annual rate of pay for a circuit judge of the United States.

(3)

For any other Member of Congress, including a Delegate or Resident Commissioner to the Congress, the annual rate of pay shall be equivalent to the greater of $223,400 or the annual rate of pay for a district judge of the United States.

Effective date

The amendment made by subsection (a) shall apply with respect to pay periods occurring after the date of the regularly scheduled general election for Federal office held in November 2024.
