The last time the federal government ran a budget surplus was fiscal year 2001. Since then, they’ve run a deficit every single year. Last year, fiscal year 2020, set an all-time deficit record at $3.1 trillion, due to massive COVID-19 relief legislation on top of what was already a nearly trillion-dollar deficit the year prior.
The National Debt Clock is a modern-day New York City landmark, installed in 1989 in Manhattan when the debt was “only” around $3 trillion.
