Context

College sports is a massive business. In 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, schools raised $18.9 billion in revenue for college sports and spent $18.8 billion.

Where does this money come from and where does it go? To some extent, we know the answers. All participating schools — both public and private — have been required to submit their audited sports revenue and expenditure data to the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) since fiscal year 2004.

Yet there are still some gaps in the data released to the public. The NCAA breaks the aggregate numbers down by division, by sport, and by gender on their website. And public schools are required to release their data to the public; USA Today’s sports ...
