Context

Although private shipping companies like FedEx and UPS can ship alcohol, federal law has barred “the mails” from doing so since 1909. (See page 49 of that linked PDF for the original law.) The modern-day incarnation of “the mails,” the U.S. Postal Service, was founded in 1971. In other words, you can’t ship alcohol through USPS.

Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine, many people turned to buying alcohol online. The alcohol e-commerce industry surged by 42 percent in 2020, to $24 billion. As a result, many believe now is the time to remove this decades-old ban on USPS alcohol shipments.
