Context

When Duke basketball star Zion Williamson’s Nike sneakers split open during a 2019 game, the company’s stock dropped by $1.1 billion — and not just because of the sneakers. Williamson’s own presumed monetary worth at the time was so high that only a year later, his combined salary and endorsements as a pro on the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans totaled $27.3 million. Yet while he was at Duke, Williamson earned nothing beyond the monetary value of his scholarship.

At least Williamson ended up being paid what he was worth, starting the next year. That’s more than can be said for college players who *don’t *end up playing professionally, as 98.4 ...
