Popularly nicknamed “Obamacare,” the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 allowed for healthcare exchanges which allow uninsured people to buy private plans in the state where they live, unconnected to their employment status. The law also implemented certain regulations like banning health insurance companies from discriminating against patients because of preexisting conditions and requiring those companies to spend at least 20 percent of their revenues on healthcare costs.
