Context

At the United States’ five military service academies, young people train to become members of the Armed Forces. Applicants for four of those five schools must submit an official recommendation from their member of Congress.

The most famous is likely the Army’s in West Point, NY, often referred to simply as “West Point.” The others include the Navy’s in Annapolis, MD; the Air Force’s in Colorado; the Marines’ in Kings Point, NY; and the Coast Guard’s in New London, CT — the only service academy that does not require congressional nominations.
