In November 2018, Montana held a state ballot initiative that would have strengthened water pollution regulations. Sandfire, a Canadian subsidiary of an Australian company, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in opposition. The ballot measure was ultimately rejected by Montanas, with 58 percent of voters voting against it.
