Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA20) failed to be elected Speaker of the House on the first ballot earlier this month, marking the first time that an initial ballot failed to produce a majority winner since 1923.
A small minority of right-wing Republican defectors prevented McCarthy from an outright majority by voting for alternative candidates instead. Those alternatives included Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ5), Jim Jordan (R-OH4) and Byron Donalds (R-FL19). One holdout, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL1), even voted for Donald Trump on the seventh, eighth, and 11th ballots.
