While horse racing remains popular, the tide has turned solidly against racing greyhound dogs in recent years. Critics on both sides of the political aisle have cited issues including dogs being confined in repressive cages outside of racing time, drug enhancement on the animals, and some trainers who kill dogs that don’t make the cut.
Greyhound racing is now almost completely extinct in the U.S. Most of the remaining holdout states ended the practice just in the last few years, including Florida in 2020, Alabama in 2020, Arkansas in 2022, and Iowa in 2022.
