Context

As asylum seekers enter the U.S., where should they be housed in the immediate short-term? Some Democratic politicians have suggested schools, particularly during the summer when they’re otherwise essentially unused.

In May, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) proposed housing asylum seekers at SUNY, the State University of New York. While it does not appear that this was ever actually done, even the policy’s *consideration *sparked pushback from the state’s GOP.
