In March, a report from the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and the United Nations’ anti-AIDS organization, UNAIDS, called for “non-discriminatory” enforcement of sexual age-of-consent laws around the world.
For example, that would mean nations or states:
- Wouldn’t set differing ages of consent for males and females
- Wouldn’t permit nonconsensual sex or rape when a teenager is married, the so-called “marriage loophole” in some jurisdiction
- Wouldn’t criminalize consensual sex between two teenagers, such as a 17-year-old and 16-year-old if that jurisdiction’s age of consent is 17
Some in the right-wing media ecosystem misrepresented the report as advocating for overturning age-of-consent laws worldwide, or legalizing sexual relations between adults and children, even though it actually advocated no such thing …
