The organization governing Florida high school sports recently proposed a mandate that all athletes answer several questions about their menstrual cycles, when applicable, on required medical forms.

The questions had already been listed on the forms, but optional, for more than 20 years. The proposal was to make them mandatory.

The idea for these mandatory questions aligned with two major social policy initiatives of Florida Republicans.

One was to help identify abortions, particularly those violating the state’s 2022 law banning most abortions after 15 weeks. The Florida Supreme Court will soon consider a challenge to the law’s constitutionality, but in January they voted 4–1 to let the law remain in effect until that final ruling.
