Context

The U.S. Department of Agriculture calculates that a much higher percentage of small farms are at a high financial risk level versus midsize or large farms. Yet many smaller farms don’t take advantage of certain government offerings, in a way that larger farms often do.

For example, 78% of U.S. farms didn’t have crop insurance, even though the government has operated the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) since the 1930s. At the same time, the largest 10 percent of farms receive more than half of all crop insurance subsidies.
