Context
Three of the four biggest bank failures in U.S. history have occurred in 2023, even though the year is only half over.
Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank both failed in March, followed by First Republic Bank in May. Prior to collapsing, they ranked as the #16, #29, and #14 largest banks in the country, respectively.
In the wake of these failures, much public and congressional anger alike focused on executive compensation. In 2022, the year before the bank failures, Silicon Valley Bank’s CEO Greg Becker earned $9.9 million and Signature Bank CEO Joe DePaolo earned $8.6 million.
