Context
In 2018, President Donald Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new Justice Department initiative to investigate and tackle Chinese espionage. Nicknamed the China Initiative, its primary focuses included Chinese hacking, spying, stealing of American technology, and trade theft.
Supporters argue such a program is actually more relevant now than it was then, given such 2020s events as the Chinese spy balloon that floated over America for several days in January and February 2023, and rising concerns over potential surveillance of Americans through popular Chinese-based apps like TikTok.
