He was previously the representative for Virginia's 2nd congressional district (1795-1797); the representative for Virginia's 2nd congressional district (1793-1795; Democratic Republican); the representative for Virginia's 3rd congressional district (1791-1793; Democratic Republican); and the representative for Virginia's 3rd congressional district (1789-1791; Democratic Republican).
