Selden was the representative for Alabama’s 5th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 1965 to 1968.

He was previously the representative for Alabama’s at-large district as a Democrat from 1963 to 1964; and the representative for Alabama’s 6th congressional district as a Democrat from 1953 to 1962.
