Long, a Republican, was a senator from Kansas from 1903 to 1909.

He was previously the representative for Kansas's 7th congressional district (1901-1903); the representative for Kansas's 7th congressional district (1899-1901); and the representative for Kansas's 7th congressional district (1895-1897).
