Rep. Daniel Moreau Barringer

Former Representative for North Carolina’s 3rd District

Barringer was the representative for North Carolina’s 3rd congressional district and was a Whig. He served from 1847 to 1849.

He was previously the representative for North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district as a Whig from 1845 to 1847; and the representative for North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district as a Whig from 1843 to 1845.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Barringer was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Barringer was one of them.

Voting Record

Missed Votes

From Dec 1843 to Mar 1849, Barringer missed 283 of 1,717 roll call votes, which is 16.5%. This is better than the median of 24.5% among the lifetime records of representatives serving in Mar 1849. The chart below reports missed votes over time.

We don’t track why legislators miss votes, but it’s often due to medical absenses, major life events, and running for higher office.
