Former Senator for Missouri

Cockrell was a senator from Missouri and was a Democrat. He served from 1899 to 1905.

He was previously a senator from Missouri as a Democrat from 1893 to 1899; a senator from Missouri as a Democrat from 1887 to 1893; a senator from Missouri as a Democrat from 1881 to 1887; and a senator from Missouri as a Democrat from 1875 to 1881.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Cockrell was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Cockrell was one of them.
