Stanton was the representative for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 1853 to 1855.

He was previously the representative for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1851 to 1853; the representative for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1849 to 1851; the representative for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1847 to 1849; and the representative for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district as a Democrat from 1845 to 1847.
