He was previously a senator from Massachusetts as a Republican from 1895 to 1901; a senator from Massachusetts as a Republican from 1889 to 1895; a senator from Massachusetts as a Republican from 1883 to 1889; a senator from Massachusetts as a Republican from 1877 to 1883; the representative for Massachusetts’s 9th congressional district as a Republican from 1875 to 1877; the representative for Massachusetts’s 9th congressional district as a Republican from 1873 to 1875; and the representative for Massachusetts’s 8th congressional district as a Republican from 1869 to 1873.
