Jones was a senator from Iowa and was a Democrat. He served from 1853 to 1859.

He was previously a senator from Iowa as a Democrat from 1848 to 1853; the representative for Wisconsin as a Democrat from 1837 to 1839; and the representative for Michigan as a Democrat from 1835 to 1837.
