Jones was the representative for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 1857 to 1859.

He was previously the representative for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district as a Democrat from 1855 to 1857; the representative for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district as a Democrat from 1853 to 1855; the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from 1851 to 1853; the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from 1849 to 1851; the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from 1847 to 1849; the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from 1845 to 1847; and the representative for Tennessee’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from 1843 to 1845.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Jones was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Jones was one of them.
