Bryan was the representative for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district and was a Republican. He served from 1821 to 1823.

He was previously the representative for Tennessee’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1819 to 1821.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Bryan was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Bryan was one of them.
