He was previously a senator from Tennessee as a Democrat from 1889 to 1895; a senator from Tennessee as a Democrat from 1883 to 1889; a senator from Tennessee as a Democrat from 1877 to 1883; the representative for Tennessee’s 9th congressional district as a Democrat from 1851 to 1853; and the representative for Tennessee’s 9th congressional district as a Democrat from 1849 to 1851.
