Leftwich was the representative for Virginia’s 7th congressional district and was (unknown party). He served from 1823 to 1825.

He was previously the representative for Virginia’s 14th congressional district as a Republican from 1821 to 1823.

Leftwich was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Leftwich was one of them.
