He was previously the representative for Massachusetts’s 1st congressional district as a Republican from 1873 to 1875; the representative for Massachusetts’s 1st congressional district as a Republican from 1869 to 1873; the representative for Massachusetts’s 2nd congressional district as a Republican from 1861 to 1863; the representative for Massachusetts’s 2nd congressional district as a Republican from 1859 to 1861; the representative for Massachusetts’s 2nd congressional district as a Republican from 1857 to 1859; and the representative for Massachusetts’s 2nd congressional district as an American from 1855 to 1857.
