McLachlan was the representative for California’s 7th congressional district and was a Republican. He served from 1907 to 1911.

He was previously the representative for California’s 7th congressional district as a Republican from 1905 to 1907; the representative for California’s 7th congressional district as a Republican from 1903 to 1905; the representative for California’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1901 to 1903; and the representative for California’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1895 to 1897.
