Dawson was the representative for Virginia’s 11th congressional district and was a Republican. He served from 1813 to 1815.

He was previously the representative for Virginia’s 10th congressional district as a Republican from 1811 to 1813; the representative for Virginia’s 10th congressional district as a Republican from 1807 to 1811; the representative for Virginia’s 10th congressional district as a Republican from 1805 to 1807; the representative for Virginia’s 10th congressional district as a Republican from 1803 to 1805; the representative for Virginia’s 15th congressional district as a Republican from 1801 to 1803; the representative for Virginia’s 15th congressional district as a Republican from 1799 to 1801; and the representative for Virginia’s 15th congressional district as a Republican from 1797 to 1799.
