He was previously the representative for Kentucky's 5th congressional district (1803-1805); the representative for Kentucky's 2nd congressional district (1801-1803); the representative for Kentucky's 2nd congressional district (1799-1801); and the representative for Kentucky's 2nd congressional district (1797-1799).
