Kean was a senator from New Jersey and was a Republican. He served from 1905 to 1911.

He was previously a senator from New Jersey as a Republican from 1899 to 1905; the representative for New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district as a Republican from 1887 to 1889; and the representative for New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district as a Republican from 1883 to 1885.
