Lewis was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people.
The Washington Post compiled the
first database of slaveholding members of Congress
by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents.
Lewis was one of them.

From Jan 1870 to Mar 1875, Lewis missed 1,204 of 1,845 roll call votes, which is 65.3%. This is much worse than the median of 31.3% among the lifetime records of senators serving in Mar 1875. The chart below reports missed votes over time.
