McCarty was the representative for Indiana’s 5th congressional district and was an Anti Jacksonian. He served from 1835 to 1837.

He was previously the representative for Indiana’s 5th congressional district as a Jackson from 1833 to 1835; and the representative for Indiana’s 3rd congressional district as a Jackson from 1831 to 1833.
