Former Representative for Virginia

Clay was the representative for Virginia and was a Republican. He served from 1815 to 1817.

He was previously the representative for Virginia’s 14th congressional district as a Republican from 1811 to 1813; the representative for Virginia’s 14th congressional district as a Republican from 1807 to 1811; the representative for Virginia’s 14th congressional district as a Republican from 1805 to 1807; the representative for Virginia’s 14th congressional district as a Republican from 1803 to 1805; the representative for Virginia’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1801 to 1803; the representative for Virginia’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1799 to 1801; and the representative for Virginia’s 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1797 to 1799.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Clay was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Clay was one of them.
